Now that Anthony “Rumble” Johnson has his revenge against Kevin Burns for the eye poke and loss he is set to move up the UFC welterweight ladder.  The eye poke aside saw a very good year for Johnson who had two great highlight reel KO wins in 2008.   Now he is set to start 2009 off strong against the ever tough Luigi Fiorvanti.  This should be a great stand up war between two very tough welterweights.  The two will clash February 7th at UFC Fight Night 17 according to several outlets.  MMAJunkie first reported the bout today.

Both Johnson and Fiorvanti are coming off of wins and both are trying to escape being stuck in the middle of the pack in the UFC’s stacked welterweight division.  The winner here would move up the rankings.

The UFC Fight Night 17 event will be headlined by a fight between lightweights Joe Lauzon and Hermes Franca.  Also, the card will see Josh Neer fight Mac Danzig, Amir Sadollah return against Nick Catone.  In addition, Cain Velasquez will be in action as well as top fighters such as Rich Clementi, Kurt Pellegrino, and UFC newcomer Jake Rosholt will grace the card.

UFC News: Hermes Franca vs. Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 17

In an interview with Jeremy Stephens the other day he stated that Hermes Franca was going to fight in February.  It looks like Stephens was correct and it look like he will be fighting TUF 5 alum Joe Lauzon. This should be a very interesting fight.  Both guys are top tens in the UFC divison…or close to it.  Both guys are serious contenders.  Both guys are coming off of wins.  Lauzon comes fof a win over Kyle Bradley and Franca comes off of a win against Marcus Aurelio.  The winner of this fight will be considered an upper eshalon UFC lightweight.

Lauzon is my earlier favorite to win this one, but it certainly can be a tough fight with a couple of tough fighters.

UFC Fight Night 17 will be held on February 7 and will feature bouts between TUF 6 winner Mac Danzig and Josh Neer as well as TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah taking on Nick Catone.  I look for all 3 of these fights to make the televised card with a event yet to be named to be tapped for the main event.

UFC News: Amir Sadollah vs. Nick Catone at UFC Fight Night 17

The fight between TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah and UFC newcomer Nick Catone was scheduled to take place at UFC 91, but the week of the fight Sadollah was forced to withdraw due to a leg infection.  The fight now looks to be rescheduled for February 7th and UFC Fight Night 17 according to MMAJunkie.

Catone said:

I was training about three months for the fight very hard and was definitely disappointed about not getting in there and making my debut, but it looks like Feb 7, we’re going to get it on at the Ultimate Fight Night 17.

Mac Danzig is already slated to face Josh Neer in the same event.

UFC News: Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer at UFC Fight Night 17

It looks as if Mac Danzig will take on Josh Neer at UFC Fight Night 17 on February 7th.  I doubt that will be the headliner, but it will be ont he main card for sure.  Perhaps Josh Neer is the guinea pig for TUF winners.  Next up will be the TUF 8 lightweight winner I reckon.  This should be a good fight, but Danzig better look better against Neer than he did against Guida.  Josh Neer is a tough opponent who is coming off of a close fight with Nate Diaz, who may also grace this card.  I expect this plus UFC 95 to start coming together in the next few weeks.  However, the Danzig vs. Neer fight will be a tough fight to pick.  I look forward to that one.
