Official Fight of the Night: Jim Miller vs. Matt Wiman

Official Submission of the Night: Steve Cantwell

Official Knockout of the Night: Josh Koscheck

  • Josh Koscheck looked to be in a different league than Yoshiyuki Yoshida.  What a KO!  I hope he isn’t done with the UFC following his AKA troubles.  He showed he is improved and well rounded
  • Mike Swick also impressed in his quick KO of Jonathan Goulet.  He is a serious contender ay 170.
  • Steve Cantwell is known for good Muay Thai and striking, but this submission was sick.  If you didn’t see it check it out.  I think Al-Hassan’s arm is still in the octagon somewhere
  • Jim Miller looked really, really good against a tough Matt Wiman.  I think Miller can contend one day for the title.  Remember, this fight was on very short notice.
  • Tim Credeur has wild looping punches, but he was effective.  He is improving also.
  • Ben Saunders was most impressive.  That was vicious.  Brandon Wolff got dominated.   I have never seen someone eat more knees and have a bigger knot on their head.  Wow.  Saunders impressed me.
  • Prayers go out to Corey Hill who suffered a broken leg in his fight with Dale Hartt.  He had to be taken out in a stretcher.  More on this as news comes in
  • The fight for the troops idea was worthwhile and handled well.  What a classy event that showed the spirit of MMA.  I liked Goldberg’s comments that the UFC is a “sport”, but the soldiers fight real life.  There are no ref’s, tapouts, etc. in battle.  Very true.  Even hardcore fans ought not loose sight of that.  Also, Rogan had some good political thoughts at the end about the “bulls***” of the bailouts of  GM and AIG vs. the worthwhile cause of the intrepid fallen heroes fund.
  • Overall, a great show with good fights.

My UFC Fights for The Troops Preview and Predictions

Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Koscheck is the obvious favorite here, but there has been a lot of drama in his life recently. Koscheck is coming off of a loss to Thiago Silva at UFC 90.  Also, there is all the drama that has been going on at AKA.  Koscheck apparently is right in the middle and will not sign the agreement.  Franklin McNeil, on MMA Live, speculated that this could be Koscheck’s last UFC fight win or loose.  I don’t know about that, but I do know he may have some distractions.  That has to affect him.  If it wasn’t for that I would clearly pick Kos to win.  Yoshida may be a good pick for some of our risky betters out there.  Yoshida is a well roudned fighter who looked very good against War Machine in his debut.  Yoshida is a solid judoka with well rounded MMA skills.  Koscheck is a wretler first, but has much improved striking skills.  Which Koscheck will we see?  There is a part of me which wants to pick Yoshida to win this fight, and he very well could, but the safe pick is still Koscheck.  I will pick Koscheck to win by unaimous decision.

Mike Swick vs. Jonathan Goulet

Goulet has looked better lately than he had before.  However, his lasts two wins came over Kuniyoshi Hironaka and Paul Georgieff.  He has a career 4-3 record in the UFC.  Goulet is a decent fighter who can be very aggressive, however Mike Swick is a legit top ten welterweight and could climb higher.  I do not expect Swick to fall of the horse against Goulet.  When it comes down to it I think Swick is better all around and I think he will take this fight by TKO in round 2.

 Matt Wiman vs. Jim Miller

The original fight was slated to be Wiman vs. Frank Edgar, however last week Edgar was forced to withdraw due to an injury.  Jim Miller is a solid replacement that many feel could really climb into elite status in the UFC.  Miller is a gamer.  He steps in on little notice against a very good opponent in Matt Wiman.  A lot of people forget that Wiman is 4-0 since coming off of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5.  Guys like Maynard, Diaz, and Lauzon have gotten all the attention from that season of TUF, but Wiman is right there with them.  This is a tough fight to pick.  Miller ought to have better wrestling and better jiu jitsu than Wiman.  Whereas Wiman ought to have better striking skills.  When it comes down to it one of the questions would have to be Miller’s cardio in stepping in near last minute.  Will it be a factor?  I see this as a tough fight between two guys climbing the ladder at 155.  In the end I think Miller wins it by decision.  However, watch for the submission and watch Wiman’s hands.

Steve Cantwell vs. Razak Al-Hussan

Cantwell is young and very underrated.  He was not expected to beat Stann in their second fight, but I have to believe that Cantwell got on the radar with his win over Stann.  Cantwell has great striking skills.  Cantwell appears to be fairly versatile as a fighter.  I have a feeling that this fight will stay standing and that Cantwell will win by TKO in round 1.

Nate Loughran vs. Tim Credeur

Nate Loughran is 1-0 in the UFC, with his win coming over Johnny Rees.  Loughran also boasts a 9-0 career record.  However, he is stepping in against a solid veteran in Tim Credeur.  Credeur did very will on the Ultimate Fighter 7, loosing twice in the semi-finals to Jesse Taylor and C.B. Dolloway.  Credeur is best known for his very good ground skills.  Loughran also has some ground skills, 8 of his 9 wins have come by way of submission.  I look for this fight to eventually hit the ground and to become very technical.   I look for Credeur to win by submission in round 2.

Luigi Fiorvanti vs. Brodie Farber

The military fans love Luigi Fiorvanti, the ex-marine.  Fiorvanti is coming off of a disappointing loss to Diego Sanchez.  Farber is also coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Rory Markham.  It appeared Farber was about to finish Markham off when Markham landed a head kick that KO’d Farber is highlight reel fashion.  I think Fraber is a solid fighter.  The loser of this fight very well could be out of the UFC.   I really think that Luigi will come pumped and ready to win for the fans at this one.  That is why I think that Fiorvanti wins this win by TKO in round 2.

Steve Bruno vs. Johnny Rees

Steve Bruno, who trains out of American Top Team is 0-1 in the UFC, with his loss coming to Chris Wilson.  Rees is also 0-1 in the UFC losing his bout to Nate Loughran.  This is another bout of the loser leaves the UFC.  Therefore, I pick Steve Bruno to win by decision.

Eddie Sanchez vs. Justin McCully

Sanchez will want this fight to stay standing.  McCully may just want to stand and trade as well.  If it stays on its feet I really expect Sanchez to pull out a win by KO or TKO and that is what I think will happen.

Ben Saunders vs. Brandon Wolff

Wolff is a highly regarded fighter.  Saunder is a solid fighter and TUF 6 alum.  These guys could really go at it on Wednesday.  In the end I pick Wolff to win by decision.

Corey Hill vs. Dale Hartt

Corey Hill was expected to be a very good fighter and that is why the UFC has kept him around despite his inexperience.  He has no ground game, but he does have great Muay Thai.  The loser of this fight will be sent packing from the UFC.   I think Hill’s size will be the difference.  Corey Hill by TKO in round 1.

UFC News: Jim Miller to Replace Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 16

The word of the street (well, not the street, but FiveOuncesofPain) is that Frankie Edgar has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming bout with Matt Wiman on December 10th at UFC Fight Night 16: Fight For the Troops.  However, Jim Miller has been tapped at a replacement.  This is what FiveOucnesofPain had to say:

An injury sustained during training has forced lightweight competitor Frankie Edgar out of a scheduled bout vs. Matt Wiman during next Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 16: “UFC Fight for the Troops” event.  Replacing Edgar will be another New Jersey based fighter, up and coming lightweight prospect Jim Miller. FiveOuncesOfPain.com learned of the news exclusively after speaking with a source close to one of the fighters.

Many will see this as a hit to the fight card, but I don’t know if it is. Frank Edgar is very good and has great wrestling, but Jim Miller is a good opponent.  He may be a tougher opponent for Wiman.  I think Miller may have more danegrous submissions.  Wiman has good striking, but Miller may have him beat on the ground.  Anyways, Miller is a solid prospect in the UFC.  Good job by the UFC finding a great replacement who even has a similar style as Edgar.

·         Thiago Alves vs. Georges St. Pierre/B.J. Penn

Other Thoughts:

·         When people talk about staked divisions they think of the UFC welterweight division.  The best welterweights are here.  There may be a handful of decent welterweights outside the UFC including Jake Shields, WEC’s Carlos Condit, Hayato Sakurai, Jay Hieron and Nick Thompson.

·         Jake Shields will likely land in the UFC.  That is what he wants and where he wants to be.  There are a lot of potential match ups here for him.

·         Thiago Alves will get a title shot in 2009 against the winner of Penn vs. St. Pierre.

·         Martin Kampmann signed a new contract and should fight at 170

·         B.J. Penn very well could become a fixture at 170 as he could vacate his lightweight title win or lose against St. Pierre.

Match Ups I’d Like to See:

·         Yushin Okami vs. Anderson Silva

·         Thales Leites vs. Rousimar Palhares

·         Demian Maia vs. Michael Bisping

Other Thoughts:

·         The UFC Middleweight division is very, very underrated!  I believe it is because of Anderson Silva’s dominance.  The middleweight division does not have a clear number 1 contender, but from top to bottom I would put this division with any.  Albeit, the UFC’s competitors have some middleweight talents in the likes of guys like Gegard Mousasi, Jacare, Vitor Belfort, Matt Lindland, Jorge Santiago, and  Kazuo Misaki.  Not to mention the few solid middleweights from EliteXC such as Robbie Lawler, Joey Villasenor, Scott Smith, Frank Shamrock and Benji Radach.  The UFC is sure to pick some of those guys up

·         Rumor has it the UFC is in negotiations with top middleweight Yoshihio Akiyama.  I do not know if they call pull him away from DREAM and Sengoku, but that would be a huge add.

·         The middleweight division is growing with adds like signing Denis Kang, the move of WEC’s division which will add Chael Sonnen and Jake Rosholt as well as guys like Aaron Simpson and Danillo Vilefort likely to come over.

·         Paulo Filho will not be in the UFC…yet.

·         TUF 9 will feature middleweight coaches with Michael Bisping being a lock.  The other names being thrown around are Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt and even Demian Maia

UFC News: Steve Cantwell vs. Razak Al-Hussan at UFC Fight Night 16

First the WEC decided to close its 185 and 205 lb divisons and fold them into Zuffa owned UFC.  Then, the UFC announced a December Fight for the Troops event.  Then we learned, that a rubber match between Steve Cantwell and Brian Stann would take place at that event.  Following that we learned that Brian Stann was forced to withdraw due to a foot injury.  It now appears the UFC has his replacement in Iowa based fighter Razak Al-Hussan.

Cantwell will make his UFC debut just about a week after his 22nd birthday.  Cantwell is the reigning WEC light heavyweight champion and should be a solid addition to the stacked UFC divison.  I do not know what to expect from Cantwell in the UFC, but I expect that he will be a good prospect.  He is very young and the UFC should hang on to him.  His opponent was initially scheduled to fight Andre Gusmao at UFC 87, but withdrew due to a chest injury.

UFC News: Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell at UFC Fight Night 16

A source close to UFC Blogger has revealed that Brian Stann will take on WEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell at UFC Fight Night 16.  This will be the rubber match between the two fighters.  Brian Stann won the WEC light heavyweight title by defeating Doug Marshall in a vicious KO.  Brian Stann is a relative newcomer to MMA and should be an exciting add to this card and to the UFC.  He has a lot to learn, but he has shown he has a tough chin and great potential, not to mention the fact that he is incrediblly popular.  I knew that Brian Stann would appear on this card and predicted it when the first mention was made of this event.  It was just reported today that the WEC would fold their light heavyweight and middleweight divisons, and that the December 3rd event would be the last one promoting those weight classes.  They didn’t waster any time.  What better headliner to have for this event than the All-American, Marine veteran Brian Stann.  Not to mention it should be an exciting fight.  Steven Cantwell, the current champion.  He had an impressive TKO of Stann to take his belt.

The rematch had already been discussed internally at the WEC, and according to Stann, as happy as he was to get another shot at Cantwell, he was a little sad that a week later a fight would take place in front of the military and he wouldn’t be involved. This from Brian Stann via MMAweekly.com

“They were talking to me about a rematch right after I lost that fight, so I was already excited about that and I thought it was going to be Dec. 3 in Vegas, so I’d be fighting Steve (Cantwell) in his hometown for the third time,” Stann said in an exclusive interview with MMAWeekly.com.  “It was kind of like a tear in my heart because all of a sudden I was watching Spike TV and watching the Fight Night and they announced this special featuring the Fallen Heroes Fund and it’s going to benefit TBI (traumatic brain injury) patients. “I have so much experience with my guys that suffer from TBI and to get to fight on a military base.  I was in Iraq when they fought on the marine base last time so I didn’t get a chance to fight or even be there, and I just thought this is a dream come true.”  “Most people go to fights to watch their heroes or their role model fight. For me, to fight in Fort Bragg, and Fort Bragg is only an hour and 15 minutes away from my old Marine corps base, so a ton of my marines are going to be up there, plus all the young soldiers.  That’s like a dream come true to me.  Now, I’m fighting in front of my heroes, the people who inspire me. I’ll fight till I’m dead in front of those guys.  It’s a lifetime experience right there.  I’m really excited.  I was already calling a bunch of my Marines.  One in particular, a guy by the name of Robert Gas, who when we were hit by a suicide vehicle during my first tour and he took some severe shrapnel damage to the head and he had several brain surgeries since then and obviously suffers from severe TBI, and I’m going to be contacting him and getting him cage side seats and flying him up for that.”

I can tell you who will be the crowd favorite and the sentimental favorite at this event.  Reading that quote caused me to jump on the Stann bandwagon for this one.  I like Cantwell and hope he has a UFC future, but I want Stann to win in front of his fellow soldiers.  This very well could be the main event.  MMAweekly also is reporting that Brian Stann will also move his training camp to New Mexico and work with Greg Jackson and his camp to prepare.

What a card this is shaping up to be:

Brian Stann vs. Steven Cantwell

Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Mike Swick vs. Jonathan Goulet

Matt Wiman vs. Frank Edgar

UFC News: Tim Credeur vs. Nate Loughran at UFC Fight Night 16

MMAweekly is reporting that Tim Credeur will fight Nate Loughran at UFC Fight Night 16.  Credeur was a TUF 7 fighter who aired very well in the show, but lost in the semi-finals to Jesse Taylor and then again in the semi-finals to C.B. Dolloway.  Credeur rebounded with a win over Cale Yarbrough at UFC Fight Night 14 in July.

Nate Loughran won his debut against Johnny Rees at UFC Fight Night 14.  This should be a good fight, however I would have to pick Credeur to win this one.

UFC News: Cain Velasquez vs. Mustafa Al-Turk

I had heard rumblings that the UFC was having a hard time finding a willing opponent for UFC Heavyweight fighter Cain Velaquez, who is an up and comer and not far from really being on the radar.  The first rumor I heard was he was fighting Antoni Hardonk at UFC 90, but it appears that is not true and that he will fight British Cage Rage Heavyweight Champ Mustafa Al-Turk.  This from MMAmania.com:

Hot heavyweight blue chip prospect Cain Velasquez (4-0) will likely return to action against Octagon newcomer Mustafa Al-Turk (6-3) at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fights for the Troops” at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., on December 10.

MMAmania.com recently learned of the possible match up between the future the division and the current Cage Rage British Heavyweight Champion.

Velasquez is an undefeated American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout who has won all of his UFC bouts (two), building a reputation as a dangerous opponent who many in the division would prefer to avoid. Brad Morris and Jake O’Brien weren’t so lucky, and the former Arizona State University wrestler stopped them both in the first round.

He is widely regarded as a future champion, a distinction his possible opponent already has locked down.

Al-Turk — who fights out of the famous London Shoot gym in the United Kingdom — reportedly just signed a four-fight contract to fight for the UFC after a successful run in Europe on the Cage Rage circuit. In fact, he has six wins in seven attempts for the promotion and is riding a two-fight win streak.

So far the UFC Fight Night card looks good and features:

Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Mike Swick vs. Jonathan Goulet

Cain Velasquez vs. Mustafa Al-Turk

Steve Bruno vs. Luke Cummo

Eddie Sanchez vs. Justin McCully

Luigi Fiorvanti vs. Brodie Farber

Corey Hill vs. Dale Hartt

Nate Loughran vs. ?

I look for two to three more fights to be put on the main card.

UFC News: Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida Fight Possible at UFC Fight Night 16

The UFC did officially announce a December 10th event live at Fort Bragg to benefit the troops.  This will be a chance to build a treatment center for veterans with head injuries.  Big props to the UFC for this one.  This is what sets them apart from EliteXC and Affliction.  The card should be a good event, and it should feature the rumored bout between Mike Swick and Jonathan Goulet also it is being rumored many places including MMAmania.com  Koscheck has been very good lately and is a top tier contender for the welterweight title.  Yoshida is a up and comer who recently had a bout with Karo Parisyan cancelled due to an injury to Karo.  This would be an exciting fight of two tough welterweights.  I hope the rumors are true.
